Agriculture Deputy Secretary highlights the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass in California
Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan today highlighted the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food (KYF) Compass, an interactive web-based document and map highlighting USDA support for local and regional food projects and successful producer, business and community case studies. Merrigan highlighted the new tool at the Natural Products Expo West to showcase USDA's work over the past three years. She emphasized how local and regional food systems across the country create additional economic opportunities for farmers, ranchers and food entrepreneurs, expand healthy food access and meet growing customer demand. The Compass was unveiled last week in a webinar with Merrigan and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
Specialty crops and dairy take center stage in Farm Bill discussions
Today, Chairman Frank Lucas held a field hearing in Saranac Lake, New York. It was the first of a series to be held throughout March and April to gather input in advance of writing the 2012 Farm Bill.
Members heard testimony from producers in the northeastern United States on the future of farm policy.
New York is home to a range of agricultural industries, and is among the nation's top producers of a variety of specialty crops and dairy products. The hearing focused on policies impacting those industries in particular.

Today, the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) and California Strawberry Commission announced a research partnership that will look for alternatives to fumigant pesticides. The $500,000, three-year project will explore ways to grow strawberries in peat or substances other than soil.
Growers Say Yes to California Table Grape Commission
California’s fresh grape growers affirmed the continuation of the California Table Grape Commission and its research, issues management and promotional programs for another five-year period. Kathleen Nave, president of the commission, announced the results of the two-month voting period.

In 2011, American renewable energy investment in solar and wind technologies dominated the global market, propelling the United States past China into the leadership position, according to Ernst & Young’s latest quarterlyRenewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index (CAI),. Ernst & Young LLP also issued a new forward-looking report—United States Renewable Attractiveness Indices —that benchmarks the U.S. state investments that were the driving force behind this shift, offering insight into the nation’s diverse renewable energy markets, energy infrastructures and their suitability for individual technologies. Most notably, the report highlights that, despite uncertain macroeconomic conditions, renewable energy – particularly in states like Massachusetts, Colorado, Texas and California – is positioned very favorably to benefit from future investments.
