After House Farm Dust vote, Johanns calls for Senate action on his Farm Dust legislation

U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today applauded the U.S. House of Representatives for their bipartisan action prohibiting the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating farm dust and called on the Senate to pass similar legislation he introduced in September. The bill, H.R. 1633, which passed the House today was sponsored by Rep. Kristi Noem (R-S.D.).

Frustrated farmer bans feds from crossing his land

A frustrated riverside farmer this week announced he would no longer cooperate with federal officials in the restoration of the San Joaquin. He's not letting them pass through his west Valley property anymore to work on the river.

That could be a bad sign for the river restoration. If others follow, will it slow down the hard-fought restoration? I'll be asking that question a lot in the next few months.

Members sought for 2012 Specialty Crop Block Grant Technical Review Committee

California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Secretary Karen Ross is pleased to announce the opportunity to serve as a reviewer on the 2012 Specialty Crop Block Grant Technical Review Committee. The role of the Technical Review Committee is to review, evaluate, and make recommendations on proposals to fund projects that will ensure the continued competitiveness of California specialty crops. CDFA forwards recommendations along to USDA, which funds the block grants through the federal Farm Bill. Individuals interested in serving on the Technical Review Committee are urged to apply by December 16, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.

 
   

H.R. 1633 Gives Farmers and Ranchers Regulatory Certainty

This week during The Ag Minute, Chairman Frank Lucas discusses H.R. 1633, the Farm Dust Regulation Prevention Act, a bipartisan bill that prohibits the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating farm dust that is already regulated at the state or local level. Although EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has announced that her agency does not intend to change the current standards, EPA retains the authority to do so. Furthermore, under the Clean Air Act, EPA is required to review these standards every five years. The Farm Dust Regulation Prevention Act gives farmers and ranchers a certain exemption from more burdensome standards, which will allow them to continue investing in their businesses with confidence.

Secretary Vilsack to moderate a panel of former Secretaries of Agriculture at USDA’s 2012 Outlook Forum

A historic gathering of former Secretaries of Agriculture will occur at the 2012 Agricultural Outlook Forum. Secretary Tom Vilsack will moderate a plenary panel of former Secretaries of Agriculture invited to speak on “Agriculture: Visions of the Future.”  At least six of the last eight Secretaries will participate on the panel.
